God as Light Notes by Dr. Honora M. Finkelstein It is important to observe that god is seen as light in virtually all religions. At the Light of Truth Universal Shrine (LOTUS) in Yogaville, Virginia, Sri Swami Satchidananda has built a temple with altars dedicated to all the religions of the world, to the light in all faiths, and to universal peace. What follows are the quotations from the sacred writings of those religions, all of which reflect the concept of God as Light. Hinduism: “In the effulgent lotus of the heart dwells Brahman, the Light of Lights.”—Mundaka Upanishad Judaism: “The Lord is my Light; whom shall I fear?”—Psalms Shinto: “The Light of Divine Amaterasu shines forever.”—Kurozumi Munetada Buddhism: “The radiance of Buddha shines ceaselessly.”—Dhammapada Christianity: “I have come into the world as Light.”—Holy Bible Islam: “Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth.”—Holy Koran Sikhism: “God, being Truth, is the one Light of all.”—Adi Granth African Religions: “God is the sun beaming light everywhere.”—Tribal African Native American Religions: The Light of Wakan-Tanka is upon my people—Song of Kablaya There are also altars at the LOTUS Shrine dedicated to other known religions, which bears the slogan, “Truth is One, paths are many,” and to those faiths that are still unknown.
